NDSA Report: "National Agenda for Digital Stewardship"

The NDSA National Agenda for Digital Stewardship integrates the perspective of dozens of experts and hundreds of institutions, convened through the Library of Congress, to provide funders and executive decision‐makers insight into emerging technological trends, gaps in digital stewardship capacity, and key areas for funding, research and development to ensure that today's valuable digital content remains accessible and comprehensible in the future, supporting a thriving economy, a robust democracy, and a rich cultural heritage. 2014

NDSA Report: "Web Archiving in the United States: A 2013 Survey"

This report on the results of the Fall 2013 survey (PDF) of U.S. organizations engaged in web archiving or in the process of planning a web archive was published in Fall 2014. While this survey documents the current state of U.S. web archiving initiatives, comparison with the results of the 2011-2012 survey enables an analysis of emerging trends. This report therefore describes the current state of the field, tracks the evolution of the field over the last few years, and forecasts future activities and developments. NDSA Report: "Checking Your Digital Content: What is Fixity, and When Should I be Checking It?"

This report written by a joint action team of the NDSA Infrastructure and Standards and Practices Working Groups addresses the need for guidance on fixity and audit and repair strategies as a core goal of digital preservation. This document aims to help stewards answer these questions in a way that makes sense for their organization based on their needs and resources. NDSA Report: "The Benefits and Risks of the PDF/A-3 File Format for Archival Institutions."(2014)

This report looks at the costs and benefits of the PDF/A-3 format, especially as it effects content arriving in collecting institutions. It provides background on the technical development of the specification, identifies specific scenarios under which the format might be used and suggests policy prescriptions for collecting institutions to consider. NDSA Report: "Geospatial Data Stewardship: Key Online Resources"

A report of the Geospatial Content Team that lists online resources that highlight key concepts and practices supporting the preservation and stewardship of digital geospatial data and information. The resources offer a starting point to methods, tools and approaches across the information lifecycle to assist in understanding current best practices in the stewardship of geospatial data. 2013

NDSA Report: Levels of Digital Preservation

The “Levels of Digital Preservation"are a tiered set of recommendations for how organizations should begin to build or enhance their digital preservation activities. A work in progress by the NDSA, it is intended to be a relatively easy-to-use set of guidelines useful not only for those just beginning to think about preserving their digital assets, but also for institutions planning the next steps in enhancing their existing digital preservation systems and workflows. The United States Geological Survey Fundamental Science Practices Advisory Committee Data Preservation Subcommittee has developed a set of preservation recommendations (PDF) based on the original NDSA levels guidelines. NDSA Report: Issues in the Appraisal and Selection of Geospatial Data

A report of the Geospatial Content Team of the National Digital Stewardship Alliance considering both appraisal and selection activities as they effect decisions defining geospatial content of enduring value to the nation.. Link to Issues in the Appraisal and Selection of Geospatial Data (PDF).

NDSA Report: Staffing for Effective Digital Preservation

The Standards and Practices Working Group shared what the group learned by surveying 85 institutions with a mandate to preserve digital content about how they staffed and organized their preservation functions. A poster presented at the iPres 2012 conference.

NDSA Reports: Content Case Studies

In 2012 and 2013, the NDSA Content Working Group focused on investigating guidelines for the selection of significant content, discovery of at-risk digital content or collections, and engaging all stakeholders in the process of acquiring the content, preserve it, and provide access to it. The Content Working Group’s current scope of work involves "content teams" grouped in the following topical areas and produced "Content Case Studies." Preserving.exe: Towards a National Strategy for Software Preservation. NDIIPP (2013)

A report from the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program of the Library of Congress, focused on identifying valuable and at-risk software. Topics covered include executable software preservation, game preservation, electronic literature and ideas for approaches to ensure long-term access. Analysis of Current Digital Preservation Policies. NDIIPP (2013)

This report discusses the current state of digital preservation policy planning within cultural heritage organizations. Methods, evaluation and data analysis are included, and final conclusions explore publication trends within archives, libraries, and museums. Link to the full publication (PDF).

NDSA Report: Web Archiving Survey

In 2011, the NDSA Content Working Group conducted a survey of organizations in the United States that are actively involved in, or planning to start, programs to archive content from the web. Link to the 2011 survey questions (PDF) and full report (PDF).

Science @Risk: Toward a National Strategy for Preserving Online Science (2012)

A report of the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program focused on identifying valuable and at-risk science content on the open web. Topics include, science blogging, open notebook science, citizen science and ideas for approaches to ensuring long-term access to this content.

Multi‐State Demonstration Project for Preservation of State Government Digital Information: Final Report (2012)

The Multi-State Preservation Consortium project explored the development of a demonstration project to develop a digital archive that could be used as a blueprint to help states to implement a least-cost, efficient and proven archival system. This final report documents the project goals and results.

Persistent Digital Archives and Library System: Final project report to the Library of Congress (2012)

The project explored the development of a curatorial rationale to support an automated workflow to process collections of digital publications and records, examined the practicality of Stanford University’s LOCKSS, or Lots of Copies Keeps Stuff Safe, storage networks, and worked at building a community of shared practice among its partner states in the hopes that shared software development and best practices would foster a system that could be applied to a variety of repositories. This final report documents the project goals and results.

States of Sustainability:A Review of State Projects funded by the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP) (2012)

A report produced for the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program by Christopher A. Lee of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The report summarizes findings of a review of the NDIIPP state projects, including an analysis of project deliverables and documentation, individual engagement with project participants at conferences and professional events, visits to the lead partner sites for all four projects, and monitoring of project activities and announcements.

Minnesota Historical Society Preserving State Government Digital Information NDIIPP Final Report

The Model Technological and Social Architecture for the Preservation of State Government Digital Information project developed options for multi-state collaboration in accessing and preserving digital legislative data. This final report of the project presents an array of options for managing digital legislative information in the context of a fluid technological environment and severely stressed state budgets.

2011

Data Preservation Alliance for the Social Sciences (Data-PASS), Final Report to NDIIPP at the Library of Congress (2011)

The Data-PASS project established a voluntary partnership of data repositories that identified and acquired over 1300 at-risk datasets. The Data-PASS partners also worked to develop and extend data preservation standards and practices, and cooperated on technology solutions for preservation and access. This final report outlines the collaborative structure, methods and efforts of the project partners.

Geospatial Multistate Archive and Preservation Partnership (GeoMAPP) Final Report: 2007-2011

GeoMAPP was formed in 2007 to address the challenges associated with identifying, preserving and providing long-term access to temporally significant digital geospatial content in state and local governments; dynamic data that is at-risk of being lost when updates are made. This final report provides a state-of-the-landscape overview of geoarchiving efforts and offers guidance for future work.

Creating Trust Relationships for Distributed Digital Preservation Federations (2008)

A paper presented at the iPres 2008 conference from Tyler O. Walters of the Georgia Institute of Technology and the MetaArchive project, and Robert H. McDonald of Indiana University. The authors outline a model for digital preservation federation based upon several existing models including the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank regional governance model and its similarities to successful large-scale redundant internet networks.

Representing Digital Assets using MPEG-21 Digital Item Declaration (2005)

A paper from LANL project participants Jeroen Bekaert and Herbert Van de Sompel. The article gives a brief insight into the MPEG-21 standardization effort, highlights the major characteristics of the MPEG-21 DID Abstract Model, and describes the MPEG-21 Digital Item Declaration Language (MPEG-21 DIDL), an XML syntax for the representation of digital assets based on the MPEG-21 DID Abstract Model.

The Library of Congress and the National Science Foundation hosted a workshop April 12-13, 2002 to identify specific research challenges associated with the long-term preservation of digital content. As detailed in the published report, the workshop identified a number of priority areas for research into new models, methodologies and tools for digital preservation.
