How is digital curation different from digital preservation? Some would say that instead of merely preserving for viewing, digital curation allows content to be adapted for other uses. This presentation will discuss an approach to digitizing documents that supports future adaptation. The Best Practices for TEI in Libraries gives guidance on digitizing documents in a way that goes beyond mere page images by encoding the text in a structured, open format (TEI XML). TEI is not only an open standard with rich metadata; a TEI document can be rendered in various formats, analyzed quantitatively, and, by following the philosophy of the Best Practices, “upgraded” to support future scholarly research needs.
