The Library of Congress > Digital Preservation > Partners > Archiving and Preserving e-Journals

Lead Partner: Portico (external link)

This project aims to develop an electronic system that meets the needs of both libraries and publishers to archive and preserve scholarly literature published in electronic form. By creating a technologically and economically sustainable archival system, Portico helps bridge the gap between libraries and publishers and ensures that today’s electronic scholarly publications are available to meet the future needs of scholars, researchers and students.

Objectives

  • Develop a business model that secures the financial resources necessary to cover ongoing operational costs of an e-journal archive;
  • Design a electronic archival infrastructure to encompass content preparation, archive and distribution functions, and content delivery;
  • Build an archive operation to receive and process e-content; and,
  • Share expertise and experience with the digital preservation community.
