North Carolina Geospatial Data Archiving Project

Lead Partner: North Carolina State University Libraries
Additional Partner: North Carolina Center for Geographic Information and Analysis

This project collects and preserves information identifying the geographic location and characteristics of natural or man-made features in the state of North Carolina. Project staff also work with state and county agencies to encourage good data creation practices that will improve preservation and access requirements. Geospatial data is critical for environmental health, homeland security, land management, and other purposes.

Objectives:

  • Identifying important geospatial data resources and raising awareness of geospatial archiving issues within the data producer community of North Carolina;
  • Acquiring at-risk geospatial data, including digital aerial photography as well as local records and other mapping data;
  • Gaining a richer understanding of the technical challenges associated with preserving geospatial data.

More detailed information can be found at the Project Web site
