Local use Explanation of format description terms

LC experience or existing holdings JP2_J2K_C_LSY files are being used for the service images of maps in American Memory. Meanwhile, the Library and the National Endowment for the Humanities have specified JP2_J2K_C_NDNP for use as lossy-compressed service images in the National Digital Newspaper Program, launched in 2004. For detail, see the NDNP technical guidelines. These practices feature the use of JP2_J2K_C_LSY for service images. At this writing (January 2012), there are plans to study the applicability of both lossless and lossy JPEG 2000 as master images (in the JPEG 2000 wrapper) for various still-image-based reformatting projects.
