Define Core Principles
A working group of DPOE instructors drafted a set of core principles for digital preservation training. These principles are intended to encourage the development of well-formed curriculum for inclusive training events that are offered to appropriate audiences by trained instructors. They are loosely modeled on the principles developed in A Framework of Guidance for Building Good Digital Collections by the National Information Standards Organization (NISO).
Audience- Training is targeted at a specific audience with intended outcomes identified.
- The audience cuts across domains, sectors, location, and community to the extent possible.
- The audience applies and is accepted to specific training events when appropriate for a good fit.
- The audience is actively involved in training evaluation and impact assessment.
- Training materials reflect prevailing community standards and practice.
- Training materials are suited to the purpose, level, and topic of the offering.
- Training materials include and share as many practical examples and use cases as possible.
- Training materials are made as available as possible for use by other community instructors.
- Instructors have a level of knowledge, skills, and experience appropriate to the training.
- Instructors actively update and evolve training materials as standards and practice evolve.
- Instructors seek opportunities to expand and update their knowledge and skills.
- Instructors share their knowledge, approaches, and experiences as widely as possible.
- Online and onsite venues are identified to reach a range of relevant participants.
- Onsite events are publicized beyond provider perimeters to serve the wider community.
- Events are available to any participant who meets specific criteria and prerequisites.
- Tuition for events is as affordable as possible while addressing delivery expenses.
